Our Middle School
Our middle school program is committed to supporting and promoting the academic and emotional growth of adolescents. Our curriculum gives students the blueprints for learning, invites divergent and creative thinking, teaches the skills necessary in the 21st Century, and instills and encourages the desire for further learning. We believe that students learn best in a diverse community and are committed to creating a student body who reflects New Mexico, our nation, and the world.
What is Expeditionary Learning?
As an Expeditionary Learning school, Santa Fe School for the Arts & Sciences is committed to learning that is meaningful, in which students apply their skills and knowledge to real-world issues and problems and make positive change in their communities. Expeditionary Learning uses an inquiry-based, project-based approach to learning that challenges students to think critically, work collaboratively and present their learning to authentic audiences. We connect high quality academic learning to adventure, service, and character development.
EL schools develop “Citizen Scholars,” students who not only achieve academically...they grow as scholars, engaging in academically rigorous learning experiences that make content, skills and standards come alive. They grow as citizens, using their knowledge, skills and character to address community issues and do work that meets professional standards. And, they grow as leaders, persisting until they meet high standards of quality, taking responsibility for their own learning and making a difference in their communities -Expeditionary Learning
Teacher & Student
Learning is about relationships. We want students to see the relationship between their learning and the “real world”. Our teachers foster that growth through developing caring relationships with their students. Through programs such as crew/advisory, teachers find ways to foster the unique qualities of each student. The Middle School teachers make learning engaging, maintain high expectations, and connect with their students.
As 21st Century citizens, our students learn how to work and live in a global society. We build a global perspective into our curriculum by building partnerships with local and international organizations and schools in India and Japan. We participate in international relief work. Our students learn a world language; currently we offer Spanish and Japanese. Each year, our 8th grade takes an overseas trip to perform community service while learning about language and culture. All students can attend this trip regardless of their ability to afford the trip. We have visited Costa Rica, France, Spain and Japan.
The academic program of our middle school is rigorous in content, adaptable to student needs, and engages all learners. All of our students take Algebra or Conceptual Math, Science, English, Humanities, and a World Language. Additionally, all students take Fine Art, Digital Art, Moving Images, and Life Skills. Our 8th graders participate in a self-directed mentorship program under the guidance of a community mentor. SFSAS students are very prepared for the challenges of high school and beyond.
