Summer 2010 Update

International Folk Art Market: This summer, three of our graduating 8th grade students, Sarah Colvin, Ansley DeDomenico and Brenna O'Brien and Rayna were honored to be invited to make a film about the SF International Folk Art Market. It is a powerful international art market that supports so many countries in a myriad of ways. It was quite inspiring to meet these talented artists, many of whom have overcome incredibly challenging obstacles in life and yet devote themselves to helping others through their art. We are doubly honored that they chose to put the girls' film on their website. Click on this link to see their film, "Peaces of Art." It is the second video on the page.

This film is also on You Tube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u8sr77FYjQI

National Geographic: Our school was just chosen to be a part of the All Roads National Geographic Film Program. The All Roads Film Project is a National Geographic initiative to provide a global platform for indigenous and under-represented minority-culture storytellers around the world to showcase their talents and teach a broader audience about their cultures. In addition to providing a venue for their films, All Roads offers its filmmakers and photographers a series of networking opportunities with leaders of the film and photographic community.
We will also continue our partnership with National Geographic photographer, Karin Muller and her Take 2 program which provides footage of Sudan to our students.

Green Grant: Our school has also been chosen to receive a $700.00 grant from Keep Santa Fe Beautiful for our Green Beautification and Education projects. Thank you Matt for writing the grant!

Save the Animals: Our Save the Animals Campers in the Unicorn and Stargazer camps worked very hard to help save animals and collected a combined total of $120.00 which has been donated to the National Wildlife Federation! The campers and their parents were so helpful in helping to save animals.Their efforts have made a HUGE difference to the lives of some animals.

A note from Gary- I am so appreciative of the amazing kids who made this wonderful camp so successful. Furthermore, all the campers participated in making a music CD with an awesome message. The more they share that CD, the more our message will be heard by others, and we will likely help to save even more animals.

Our Santa Fe Day Hikes for Kids book (created by the 3rd/4th grade class) has been selling like hotcakes at REI and Sangre de Cristo Mountain Works. We are looking for a publisher now! Place your order today since we are about to make more copies. I just used the guide today to follow a wonderful hiking trail to a beautiful waterfall spot in Rio en Medio and the guide was accurate and easy to follow.

Alumni News: Emily Baca (graduating class of 2010) won First Place in Precious Metals and Third Place Best of Age division this past weekend for Spanish Market! Her piece was a sterling silver butterfly titled "Madame". She also sold all of her artwork! Congratulations Emily!

John Graham, one of our wonderful moving images teacher, has been hired to travel around the world for a few months, filming for the show "Around The World For Free" aka ATWFF: an online/broadcast hybrid reality series based on the concept of whether a person can circle the globe without any money. The show follows Alex Boylan, winner of The Amazing Race 2, as he attempts to travel around the world without any money on hand. He travels with his two cameramen Zsolt Luka, and John Graham and relies on local guides and inhabitants for basic needs.
From John:
"So far the experience has been amazing, NYC, the early show, wandering the streets of NYC and then lo and behold, we start getting rides and offers of where to stay! We made our way into Boston area where crazy adventures happened. Check the sites to see what happened!

Luckily, Jocelyn is able to continue to teach our moving images classes and afterschool program this year. John might come back after his travels...we'll just have to wait and see!
